1. The 2016 vote to leave the bloc has exacerbated Britain’s economic malaise ((社会或群体的)痼疾), gumming up (使出故障; 把…搞糟) trade and muting (减弱, 缓和) investment. It has soured ((使)变坏; (使)恶化) Britain’s relationship with many of its natural allies and weakened the bonds of its own union.
It has soured Y and weakened Z.】,表示 X 这一行为不仅使 X 这一问题加剧,也使 Y 和 Z 变得更加严重。
2. Rishi Sunak, the prime minister, already deserves some credit on this score (在这一点上): quiet co-operation in areas from the North Sea to migration is under way. But that will count for little if he cannot reach a workable deal on the Northern Ireland protocol (协议). Doing so would unlock more goodies (好东西; 佳品), from participation in scientific-research schemes to closer co-operation among regulators.
可以提炼出句型【某人 already deserves some credit on this score: … But that will count for little if he/she cannot X. Doing so would unlock more goodies, from Y to Z. 】。
3. He was just a boy, only 17. Yet in the World Cup final of 1958 Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, showed the poise (镇定; 沉着; 泰然自若) and supreme skill that would mark his career. Sweden, the hosts, by two goals to one he received a high pass in the penalty (点球) area. With a defender (防守队员, 后卫) on his shoulder, he caught the ball on his chest, took one pace and flipped (抛) the ball high over another defender before running to meet it and driving an unstoppable (不可抗拒的; 不可阻挡的) volley (截踢, 截击(空中球)) low into the net.
4. As a forward (前锋) he was not that tall, but he was strong, fast and had thighs (大腿) as thick as his waist. He could read the game like a book, and control the ball as if it was drawn to him like a magnet He could also tell exactly where he was needed, and when, and what the opposition might have in mind to try to block (拦截, 阻截) him. … Dribbling (运球, 带球) was his great skill, flummoxing (使糊涂; 使失措) defenders with feints (做假动作) and sudden stops and starts. He could shoot for goal powerfully with either foot and despite his height, or lack of it, was a spring-heeled header (头球) of the ball.
5. It will be difficult if not unfeasible (不可行的; 难以实施的) to convert many of the larger office buildings into residential use. Nicole Gelinas of the Manhattan Institute, a think-tank, doubts that there will be much converting.
可以提炼出句型【it will be difficult if not unfeasible to do something.】,当你想说做某事很困难时可以用上这个句型。
