Standing up for standard

3. 原文(para 1)

TEACHING ENGLISH as a first language is not easy—many youngsters leave school feeling they never quite mastered its finer points. Recently some commentators have been wondering whether the standard version of English really deserves to be singled out as “proper” and worthy of teaching at all. The debate they set off has been unedifying because of entrenched views that have as much to do with politics as with language.

TEACHING ENGLISH as a first language is not easy—many youngsters leave school feeling they never quite mastered its finerpoints.

 point

第二句
Recently some commentators have been wondering whether the standard version of English really deserves to be singled out as “proper” and worthy of teaching at all.

 single sb/sth out
to choose one person or thing from a group for special attention, especially criticism or praise (为给予批评、表扬等)单独挑出eg:It's not fair the way my sister is always singled out for special treatment.

The debate they set off has been unedifying because of entrenched views that have as much to do with politics as with language.

 set sth off
to cause an activity or event, often a series of events, to begin or happen 引起,引发(常指一系列事件)eg:The court's initial verdict in the police officers' trial set off serious riots.
